Relaxation techniques (Jacobson, Benson)
When the body learns to let go of tension, the mind stops living as though it were still in danger.
A set of psychophysiological procedures intended to reduce autonomic arousal, modulate stress and restore a bodily state of safety. Jacobson's Progressive Muscle Relaxation starts from the hypothesis that anxiety is sustained by chronic muscular tension and that, by training the discrimination between tension and release, the organism learns a direct route to somatic self-regulation. Benson's Relaxation Response describes a physiological state opposite to stress, induced through slow breathing, a repetitive focus and a passive attitude, producing decreases in arousal, heart rate and reactivity. In contemporary clinical practice these techniques are extended with diaphragmatic breathing, coherent breathing and the body scan, and are used as a baseline intervention in anxiety, insomnia and somatisation, and as preparation for deeper emotional work. Relaxation techniques start from the premise that many psychological symptoms are sustained by chronically elevated autonomic arousal. Before working on meaning, emotion or behaviour, arousal must be reduced in order to restore minimal conditions of regulation and bodily safety. (Jacobson, 1938; Benson, 1975).

The body can be trained as a direct route to self-regulation
Jacobson showed that relaxation is not a passive state, but a trainable skill based on the conscious discrimination between muscular tension and release. Through somatic learning, the organism acquires a direct route to emotional regulation without complex cognitive mediation. (Jacobson, 1938).

Relaxation is a physiological state opposite to stress
Benson formalised the Relaxation Response as a psychophysiological pattern antagonistic to stress, characterised by parasympathetic activation, decreased heart rate and reduced reactivity. This state can be induced systematically through slow breathing, focal repetition and a passive attitude. (Benson, 1975).

Interoceptive awareness is a central therapeutic mechanism
Relaxation techniques train the fine perception of internal bodily signals, increasing interoceptive awareness and making it possible to detect arousal early, before emotional overwhelm. This somatic discrimination is key to prevention and to everyday self-regulation. (Jacobson, 1938; Lehrer & Gevirtz, 2014).

Relaxation widens the window of emotional tolerance
By reducing baseline physiological arousal, these techniques widen the window of tolerance and facilitate access to deeper emotional processes without disorganisation. They are therefore frequently used as a preparatory phase for exposure, emotional processing or trauma work. (Benson, 1975).

Repeated practice consolidates regulation and resilience
The effectiveness of relaxation techniques depends on systematic practice, which generates stable changes in autonomic regulation, heart-rate variability and resilience to stress. They are not merely interventions for relief, but physiologically grounded training of the regulated self. (Lehrer & Gevirtz, 2014).
