Classical Conditioning
To learn is to detect what announces what.
Classical conditioning, systematised by Ivan P. Pavlov and presented in canonical form in 1927, describes the associative learning by which an initially neutral stimulus (CS) acquires the capacity to evoke a response (CR) after repeated pairing with an unconditioned stimulus (US) that already produced that response naturally (UR). This experimental framework, born in physiology and neurophysiology, establishes principles such as acquisition, generalisation, discrimination, extinction, spontaneous recovery and inhibition, showing that emotional and bodily responses can be conditioned and de-conditioned as a function of environmental contingencies. Although it is not a psychotherapy, it is a crucial foundation for many clinical interventions — especially exposure, prevention of avoidance and inhibitory learning — and for the functional understanding of phobias, anxiety and trauma-related conditioned responses.
Theory of change
A person changes when new experience weakens the learned associations between cues and responses, allowing false alarms to be extinguished and responses to become more finely discriminated.
