Classical Behaviourism
Psychological science makes progress when it studies what it can observe and measure.
Classical behaviourism, set out by John B. Watson in 1913, is a foundational scientific programme that redefines psychology as a natural science of observable behaviour. Its central claim is that the legitimate object of study is not the private contents of consciousness — which Watson regarded as methodologically unverifiable — but the empirically measurable relations between stimuli and responses, in continuity with animal psychology and physiology. This programmatic turn gives priority to the prediction and experimental control of behaviour, driving the standardisation of methods, quantification and replicability. Although it is not a psychotherapy, Watsonian behaviourism opens the door to a technologically applicable psychology: if behaviour is learned under observable conditions, then it can be modified through the systematic manipulation of the environment — anticipating the later development of behaviour therapy and applied behaviour analysis.
