Schedules of reinforcement

It is not reinforcement that shapes behaviour: it is how reinforcement is distributed in time, and the uncertainty involved, that makes behaviour persistent.

The study of schedules of reinforcement analyses how different temporal and quantitative relationships between responses and consequences — ratio or interval, fixed or variable — generate characteristic patterns of behaviour, such as high and stable response rates, post-reinforcement pauses or greater resistance to extinction.
