Interpersonal Neurobiology (IPNB)
The mind emerges from the flow of energy and information within the brain and between people, and psychological health depends on the integration of that system.
Interpersonal Neurobiology (IPNB), developed by Daniel J. Siegel, is an integrative framework that brings together findings from neuroscience, attachment theory, developmental psychology, complex systems theory and clinical practice in order to understand the human mind. It defines the mind not as an exclusive product of the brain but as an emergent process that regulates the flow of energy and information both within the organism and within interpersonal relationships. From this perspective, psychological well-being depends on the degree of integration of the system: the capacity to differentiate elements (emotions, thoughts, internal states, roles) and at the same time to link them coherently. Psychopathology is conceptualised as patterns of disintegration —rigidity or chaos— in this system, which manifest as dysfunctions in emotional regulation, identity, attention and relationships. Therapeutic intervention seeks to restore integration through processes such as awareness, regulation, coherent narrative and safe relational experience, using the therapeutic relationship as a context of co-regulation and neurobiological reorganisation.

A person changes when integration increases between brain, body, emotions, memory and relationships, developing a more flexible, coherent and regulated system.

The mind is a relational and bodily emergent process
Interpersonal Neurobiology redefines the mind as an emergent process that regulates the flow of energy and information, not confined to the brain but distributed across body, nervous system and interpersonal relationships; this implies that psychological experience cannot be understood individualistically or in exclusively intrapsychic terms but as a systemic, relational phenomenon. (Siegel, 1999; 2012).

Integration is the central mechanism of mental health
Optimal psychological functioning depends on the degree of integration of the system, understood as the capacity to differentiate elements (emotions, thoughts, roles, internal states) and at the same time link them coherently; when this integration fails, the system oscillates between rigidity (excessive control) and chaos (disorganisation), which constitute the basis of psychopathology. (Siegel, 2012).

Rigidity and chaos are expressions of the system's disintegration
Psychopathology is conceptualised not as discrete categories but as patterns of disorganisation in the mind–brain–relationship system that manifest at two extremes: rigidity (inhibition, control, avoidance) and chaos (impulsivity, overwhelm, disorganisation); the therapeutic aim is to restore a dynamic balance between the two through integration. (Siegel, 2010; 2012).

Relationships shape the structure of the brain
Relational experiences, especially in early attachment, directly influence the neurobiological organisation of the brain, shaping the capacity for emotional regulation, attention, mentalising and identity; the mind develops in interaction, so relationships influence not only psychology but the very architecture of the brain. (Siegel, 1999; Schore, 2003).

Co-regulation precedes self-regulation
The capacity to regulate internal states develops initially through shared regulation with attachment figures, where emotional attunement allows the child's nervous system to stabilise; this co-regulation is progressively internalised as self-regulation, so current difficulties in regulation often reflect early relational deficits. (Siegel, 2012).

Awareness (mindsight) is an integrative process
Mindsight —the capacity to perceive one's own mind and that of others— is a key mechanism of integration that makes it possible to observe thoughts, emotions and internal states without being fused with them, facilitating emotional regulation, psychological flexibility and coherence of the self; developing awareness is not only observing but reorganising the system. (Siegel, 2010).

The autobiographical narrative integrates identity
The capacity to construct a coherent narrative of one's own life makes it possible to integrate past experiences, organise the present and orient the future, and is a key marker of mental health; fragmented, chaotic or rigid narratives reflect failures of integration and are associated with trauma, insecure attachment and dysfunction of the self. (Siegel, 1999; 2012).

The therapeutic relationship is a neurobiological process of change
Therapy acts not only at the psychological level but as a system of co-regulation that directly modifies neurobiological patterns through attunement, presence and safe relational experience; change occurs in the interaction, not solely in the technique, with the relationship acting as an active agent of the system's reorganisation. (Siegel, 2012).

The window of tolerance delimits access to change
Effective psychological processing is possible only within an optimal range of arousal (the window of tolerance); outside this range the system enters hyperarousal or hypoarousal, blocking integration, so a central function of therapy is to widen this window so that experience can be contacted and processed. (Siegel, 2012; Ogden & Minton, 2006).

Therapeutic change is a process of progressive integration
The aim of the intervention is not to eliminate symptoms directly but to promote the integration of the mind–brain–relationship system through awareness, regulation, narrative and connection, generating a more flexible, coherent and adaptive functioning that shows itself in everyday life. (Siegel, 2012).
